This picturesque cobbled street used to be the city’s main access point to the river.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, the street was the main access point from the river to the city. Formerly known as Bajada Grande, it was a natural land slope bustling with people, carts and goods. The limit between the city and the pier area was a wide path (currently Belgrano Av.), which intersected the downhill.
At one of the sides of Bajada Grande the port’s Customs Office was erected. When it was first built in 1876, the building resembled a fortress. Later, it was remodeled following a noticeable French style and finished in 1938.
Other highlights are two centenary buildings nearby, which hold the Prefectura Naval Argentina and Ente Administrador Puerto Rosario (ENAPRO).
