San Martin Square

This square is one of the blocks with more than 100 years of history of the city, it was part of the quasi-rural area in the mid-19th century. Since 1857 it was renamed as the Square of the Carts.

Then, in 1871 the Municipality projected a new square which was called Tablada and only in 1884 it adopted the name of San Martin Square.

At the beginning of the XX century, it was remodeled according to the criteria of the time, with a tree-lined road and diagonal streets. In its center there is a sapling of the historical San Lorenzo pine tree where General San Martin rested, and in 1913 the monument erected in Boulogne Sur Mer (France) was placed in honor to the hero, work of the sculptor Henri Emile Allouard. The bronze equestrian statue is 23 ft. and sits on a granite pedestal.

A relevant fact is that in 1923 an important open-air movie theater was opened here, which was called the Plaza movie theater and operated for about a decade.

This space became one of the most important green lungs of Paseo del Siglo.
