As of the mid-19th century, this area was devoted to various productive activities.
It had a privileged location. Along this section, the Parana river has high banks, which facilitated the installation of docks and the loading and unloading of goods. The remnants of this activity are the cranes that still stand on the riverbank. Refineria Argentina de Azucar (Argentine Sugar Refinery) was the most important company in the area and began operating in 1889. Railway tracks were laid for the arrival of raw materials, and a dock was built to bring the finished product to market. The transformation was completed with the creation of a neighborhood, "Refineria," with a distinctly working-class character.
