On rails

There are very few railways in Rosario’s plain and this one is the most remarkable by far.

It crosses the riverbank by Parque España and runs parallel to the river.  It is named after a well-known Argentinian president: Dr. Arturo Illia. Out of its first 800 meters, its original length by the end of 1800, only 400 meters remain after some collapses, which left its neighbors trembling with fear.

This tunnel was used by freight trains until 1970, and it went all the way to the old Rosario Central Railway station.

Every few meters, there are small caves that catch your eye.  These are safety spaces that protected pedestrians from the trains passing by.  Homeless people used them as shelters too.

Address: Sarmiento & Arturo Illia, S2000 Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina
