Barrio Pichincha

Pichincha is named in honor of the battle for American emancipation and is a neighborhood that began to consolidate between 1915 and 1920, near Sunchales Station. Delimited by Salta St., Suipacha St., Del Valle Ave., Francia Ave., and Oroño Blvd., it originally became an area of intense brothel activity with numerous establishments on the main streets. During its heyday, it was characterized by great commercial and nightlife activity, with music, gastronomy, and street vendors.

Most of the brothels in Pichincha were built under a 1913/4 municipal ordinance, which delimited specific areas for these establishments, which continued to operate until 1930, when the brothel activity was prohibited.
Rosario was a pioneer in addressing prostitution as a matter of public concern, issuing regulations that established duties and restrictions for both sex workers and brothels. Between 1890 and 1910, like other port cities in the world, it received numerous sailors, which led to the initial installation of brothels near the port. However, social pressure and urban growth displaced these brothels to the western area of the city.
A relevant point, which was recorded in the first provincial census, reveals that the city received 20,000 foreigners in 1887, making it one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the country.
Today, Pichincha, with a tradition shown on the architecture of facades, hallways, and internal courtyards, coexists with tall buildings, art markets, antique dealers, an internationally recognized gastronomic pole, and Rosario Norte Train Station, among many venues that contrast with each other, and that, in turn, amalgamate the past and the present in a continuous evolution.
